Debian 10 Buster Retiring on AWS Marketplace: Time to Upgrade to Debian 12

15 November, 2024 | Announces

If your business or project relies on Debian through AWS Marketplace, take note! AWS recently announced the retirement of Debian 10 “Buster” from its Marketplace offerings, effective as of November 13, 2024. This post breaks down what this change means, why it’s happening, and how to prepare.

A Quick Overview of Debian on AWS

Debian is one of the most widely used Linux distributions, known for its stability, security, and commitment to free software. It’s popular among enterprises for server and cloud environments, thanks to its robust package management and long-term support (LTS) for major releases. AWS has offered Debian through its Marketplace for years, allowing users to easily launch and manage Debian-based instances. However, as with most distributions, Debian periodically retires older versions to focus on maintaining and supporting newer, more secure releases.

What’s Changing on AWS Marketplace?

AWS has officially notified users of the following adjustments to Debian 10 Buster:

Visibility and Availability: Debian 10 Buster is no longer visible or available for new subscriptions on the AWS Marketplace. If you unsubscribe, you won’t be able to resubscribe or purchase the product again.

Impact on Existing Subscriptions: If you currently subscribe to Debian 10, you may continue using it. However, annual subscriptions will not be renewable after expiration, and any active instances will be converted to hourly billing once the subscription period ends.

Recommended Upgrade to Debian 12: AWS encourages users to switch to the newer Debian 12 version, which is fully supported and available for subscription. To explore this option, visit the AWS Marketplace Debian 12 page.

Why the Update?

The restriction on Debian 10 aligns with standard software lifecycle practices, aimed at maintaining the security and performance standards required for enterprise applications. As Debian 10 reaches end-of-life status, it will no longer receive security patches and updates. Upgrading to Debian 12 ensures continued access to Debian’s powerful ecosystem with the latest enhancements and security support.

Moving Forward: Why Choose Debian 12?

Debian 12 “Bookworm” brings numerous improvements and benefits:

Security & Stability
Enhanced security patches and stability improvements over older versions.

Modern Features
Updated packages and libraries aligned with today’s demands for performance, security, and cloud-native applications.

Long-Term Support
Debian 12’s LTS provides a stable, reliable environment for the years to come.

For AWS users, moving to Debian 12 not only ensures access to a fully supported environment but also helps avoid potential operational and security risks.
